This program is part of Oulu 2026 -European Capital of Culture.
Kainuu is a tar region, the land of black gold. Tar has been rowed from Sotkamo to Oulu. The peak years were at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Tar has traditionally been used in boats and ski bases. Today tar is also found in drinks, ice creams, sweets and as a tar syrup to season fish and meat.
This food walking tour smells and tastes like tar, but not too much. It stars at Vuokatti Winery in Kainuuntie 15, where we enjoyed a small tar-flavored appetizer with a welcome drink.
The walking tour continues to the Cafe Sally`s Corner, where a delicious Sotkamo-plate awaits us. The breads and flavours on the plate are local food. And tar is also present there.
Dessert is enjoyed at the Cafe of Kuppi and Kaneli, where you can taste chocolate cake with tar porter and coffee.
During the tour, the guide will tell stories about Kainuu`s food culture and destinations.
The first walking tour is on May 6th and then next one on July 25th. Register in advance at .
At other times, groups must book in advance, minimum 5 people.
