As soon as you enter the yard at Haapala BnB, the atmosphere of a real Finnish country house fills your senses. The farm has long tradition, having been inhabited since the 17th century. Siblings Juho Korhonen and Kaisa Tyler, along with their spouses, started a new chapter in its history in 2018, when Haapala BnB opened its doors to locals and tourists alike. Now Haapala’s guests can enjoy traditional Kainuu cuisine with a modern touch.
Located in Vuokatti, Haapala offers flavoursome Kainuu-based cuisine and beers from its own small brewery. Here in the farm, you can also comfortably stay in the renovated rooms and new cottages. Haapala BnB’s ambiance is a warm mix of old farm, grandma’s home, and demure Finnish design.
The Haapala kitchen invites you in with the irresistible aromas of freshly baked bread and meat stew, all made from locally-sourced ingredients. Here, everything is made in-house from start to finish and you get to taste dishes from Sotkamo and Kainuu with a modern touch. Haapala’s kitchen favours the seasonal, Finnish raw ingredients: berries, mushrooms, root vegetables, and in the autumn also game. Depending on the season, the menu includes e.g. sautéed reindeer and venison soup, but also various vegetarian and seafood dishes. Here on the farm, they brew the beer themselves. Haapala’s large copper boilers prepare the house beers, such as the Pale Ale made with spruce tips from Haapala’s own forest, its Golden Ale, Terva (Tar) Porter and Ruis (Rye) IPA.
At Haapala the welcoming, local spirit is present in everything – even the hosts’ way of speaking. The people here uphold the local traditions and stay true to what is genuine. Haapala is like a living room for the whole region, where everyone is welcome to enjoy good food, good company and warm atmosphere.
